Depression Overview

Feelings of distress, inadequacy or helplessness may occur for many different reasons and are extremely common. A sense of being overwhelmed by, or disassociated from the world can result from physiological and psychological issues.

Depression can be triggered by many factors including stress, poor diet, postural problems and allergies. It will often lead to symptoms such as chronic fatigue, change in appetite, sleep disturbance, mood swings, pain, digestive problems and irritability.

Biochemical imbalance is another important consideration as neurotransmitters carrying impulses between nerve cells are essential for healthy brain function and mood balancing. Serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline are known to help reduce tension and promote clarity of thought.

Major depression is understood clinically as a biological, medical illness. There appears to be a genetic predisposition to this condition and events such as the death of a loved one, a major loss or change, chronic stress and alcohol/drug abuse may trigger episodes of depression more easily in those with a family history of major depression. It is equally the case that depression may arise without any obvious trigger.

At Body Therapeutics the individual is supported through a range of different approaches with a view to regaining a sense of well being.
