Laser Therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a modern, safe approach to healing the body that may become a more common health care approach for the 21st Century. The action of LLLT is photochemical rather than thermal and could be compared with placing a plant in optimal sunlight. It can be used to treat injuries, wounds, skin conditions, back and neck pain, osteoarthritis and many other conditions. Its possible beneficial effects in the treatment of fatigue and depression are also being studied.

Particular frequencies of light in the infra red area of the spectrum have a biochemical effect that stimulates the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by cellular mitochondria. This is the energy production mechanism of the body and therefore has important consequences for overall health.

Universities around the world including Harvard Medical School have conducted clinical trials that clearly document the following results from laser therapy:

1. an anti-inflammatory effect
2. effectiveness in pain management
3. acceleration of tissue repair

Laser acupuncture applies laser light to traditional Chinese acupuncture points and some studies have shown this treatment to be effective.

The systemic effect of therapeutic laser light has also been well documented. A systemic effect is essentially where treatment of a particular complaint at one site (ie the right arm) affects a similar condition at another site (ie the left arm). One theory is that this results from irradiated blood circulating throughout the body after treatment.

Some systemic laser treatment involves the application of standard LLLT to a blood vessel in an attempt to irradiate the blood and benefit the 'whole system'.

Laser therapy is a painless medical therapy and no side effects have been reported but it should be administered by a qualified healthcare professional such as an acupuncturist, physiotherapist or doctor.
