Pre Menstrual Syndrome

Background to the Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interaction of hormones. The central hormones involved in this cycle are gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), oestrogen and progesterone. GnRH is secreted by the hypothalamus, the gonadotropins FSH and LH are secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, and oestrogen and progesterone are secreted at the level of the ovary. GnRH stimulates the release of LH and FSH from the anterior pituitary gland in the brain, which in turn stimulate release of oestrogen and progesterone at the level of the ovary.

What is PMS?

PMS is an oestrogen dominant condition that can sometimes be associated with polycystic ovaries (PCOS), uterine fibroids, endometriosis and fibrocystic breasts. It can be identified by a range of symptoms including irritability, lethargy, depression, breast swelling, water retention, food cravings, severe constipation, hot flushes, migraines, back pain, fibrocystic breasts, weight gain and acne.

Treatment

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can provide a very effective approach to regulating hormonal imbalance without undesirable side effects. Chinese medical theory views the kidneys, liver and spleen as the organs that must be regulated for healthy functioning of the reproductive system.
